JobQGenie overview
Development of the product started in 1997 after a customer requested assistance in providing a solution for what they perceived as a huge gap in their HA solution.
There are a number of High Availability products on the market which provide excellent object and data replication. The major problem they all suffer from, is a lack of application to data relationship. They replicate the data and objects as they change, they are usually applied on the receiving system seconds after the changes have occurred on the originating system. Under normal operating conditions and planned switching scenario's this does not affect recovery. You can ensure the data and objects are at a known position before switching the users to the target system. However, in an unplanned event the system may have multiple jobs which are running and applying data as the system crashes. For the system to be in a recoverable state you have to remove all partial data, then run those jobs again allowing the application to run addressing the right data.
IBM has been working on hardware and OS based solutions for High Availability, these are generally aimed at the higher end users providing solutions such as Clustering and Cross System Mirroring. However these solutions still suffer from the same problem as the ISV replication products, they do not mirror the job queue content and have no way of determining the job state on the source system.
Version 1.0 of JobQGenie was the initial solution to this problem. Version 5.0 has capitalized on many of the new technology enhancements provided by IBM. Recent OS changes provide more detail to the application and better data collection capabilities which we have taken full advantage of.
